On Sunday, I undertook a monster of a day-hike: over 2000 m elevation gain from Les Granges (commune Les Houches just below Chamonix-Mont-Blanc) to the Refuge de Tête Rousse. The weather was improbably gorgeous, resulting in one hell of a sunburn (going flopsy on a rock at 3200 m for 45 minutes probably didn't help in that regard).
The good news from all of this is that I can do more than 2 vertical km in a day, which opens up all sorts of possibilities.
